About Aves Argentinas
Aves Argentinas is a non-government, non-profit organization working to raise people’s awareness on the bond between them and nature. They achieve this by creating a space for nature lovers; developing projects that include informational campaigns, educational courses, conferences, and safaris; and publishing journals as well as other information on projects.
Mission Statement
Since 1916, Aves Argentinas has worked towards the conservation of wild birds and their natural habitats.
Vision
By means of publications, education, management, and investigation, Aves Argentinas intends to create greater public awareness on the importance of conserving the planet’s biodiversity. It places particular emphasis on bird species which, as bio-indicators of the health of our natural surroundings, can help us improve our quality of life.
Values
Aves Argentinas is a participatory, informed, and democratic organization which is based on science.
We value bird life…
- because wild birds are an amazing part of our natural heritage, are easy to observe, inhabit every corner of our country, and constitute an effective indicator of Argentina’s environmental health.
- because birds are an excellent vehicle for fomenting a greater public awareness of the conservation of nature in general.
- because birds are an important part of our culture and have been valued by humanity since time immemorial.
- because, in Argentina, there are over 1,000 species of wild birds, 120 of which are in serious risk of extinction.
Strategic objectives
- Identify high priority habitats of worldwide threatened bird species and protect them.
- Increase public awareness on the importance of birds, their habitats, and their biodiversity.
- Raise the number of members by acquiring new ones, and increasingly retain current ones.
- Encourage scientific ornithological research and the publication of its results.
- Improve management and administration work in Aves Argentinas in order to make our daily work more efficient.
Conservation
Argentina has a great diversity of bird life that spans 1,000 individual species. Many of them can only be found here, in this privileged corner of the planet. Thanks to Argentina’s rich geography that comprises 18 distinct ecoregions, our country enjoys an ecological wealth that greatly contributes to the planet’s biodiversity.
Nevertheless, about 10% of Argentina’s bird population currently faces extinction. Habitat fragmentation and loss are the main causes behind the decrease in population numbers. But hunting, illegal trafficking of wildlife, nest raiding, mortalities caused by the interaction with the fishing industry, and competition with invasive species also pose a threat to a great number of birds.
Aves Argentinas’ conservation program is focused on three scales of work which are equally important and within which the identification of key areas, monitoring, generation of local capabilities and management actions prevail.
Conserving Habitats
It includes the identification, maintenance, management, restoration, and monitoring of habitats that are internationally important for the natural environment in general and birds in particular; as well as the development and implementation of policies for their long term conservation.
- IBAs
- Grasslands
- The Great Chaco
Protecting Places
It includes the identification, monitoring, conservation, and restoration of a number of areas which are important to both birds and biodiversity, as well as the promotion of these places as key areas of biodiversity.
- El Bagual Reserve
- Acambuco
- Gualeguaychú
- Otamendi Natural Reserve
Saving Species
This work is done to prevent the extinction of species, to improve the conservation situation of globally threatened birds, and to halt the increase in numbers of endangered species in Argentina.
- Albatrosses and Petrels
- Swainson’s Hawk
- Aquatic birds
- Grassland birds
- Endangered birds
Education
Environmental education improves our relationship with nature.
The Escuela Argentina de Naturalistas (ean) is an original venture that Aves Argentinas undertook, and which has trained hundreds of students from different social backgrounds since 1989.
Among the participants are biology and agriculture students, aspiring park rangers, biology and physical education teachers, official department technicians, and nature lovers. They carry out field activities driven by their interests and curiosity.
For more than 25 years we have offered courses to watch wild birds in freedom, which are ideal to start studying nature. Other courses include the landscaping of green areas with native plants and outdoor photography.
Birdwatching
Birdwatching in nature is a simple activity that can provide us with a wonderful experience and requires very few elements. It is a basic activity promoted by Aves Argentinas as efficient means of entering the world of wild birds.
Green spaces in cities are areas that anyone can have access to and are ideal to get started on this fascinating activity. In any given green space in an urban area, over 20 bird species can be found, which are easily seen without any instruments.
Research
The scientific studies encouraged by Aves Argentinas help to implement strategies for the conservation of birds and their habitats.
Aves Argentinas sponsors ornithological meetings as well as other spaces for technical exchange.
El Hornero, a journal on neotropical ornithology, was first published in 1917 and was the first journal of its kind in Ibero-America. Within its pages, researchers from Argentina and many other countries publish the results of their studies in order to disseminate them in the academic arena.
Our extensive library specializing in ornithology and nature is frequently consulted by professionals, researchers, and the general public. It has complete collections of some of the foremost ornithological publications in the world as well as a wealth of images of Argentina’s wild birds.
Getting Involved
To accomplish its mission, Aves Argentinas promotes work that is integrated with local communities, other non-government organizations, universities, private businesses, and several governments. Being a partner of Aves Argentinas allows you to get to know an organization that is completely open to any questions you may have, to meet a great amount of friends of nature, and to keep up-to-date with the news on environmentalism.
Our partners receive the journal published by Aves Argentinas, the tri-annual bulletin A Vuelo de Pájaro, and position papers (every time we publish them). Furthermore, Aves Argentinas’ member credential gives you free access to our library, and discounts on our courses as well as on merchandise in our store and member stores.
Your monthly contribution helps us protect the grasslands of Argentina as well as the wild birds that inhabit them, create new natural areas which are important for birds, and protect threatened species such as the Strange-tailed Tyrant, the Saffron-cowled Blackbird, and many others. You contribute towards the work that we began striving for more than 90 years ago.
By becoming a partner of Aves Argentinas you are joining an organization where our combined efforts give us the strength to create new protected natural areas and assertively participate in forums where the conservation of nature is discussed.
With your support we will continue working on a great number of projects that will help wild birds, their natural habitats, and you. Some of these projects include:
- Important Bird Areas (IBAs)
- Marine Birds
- Grassland Birds
- Escuela Argentina de Naturalistas
- Urban Natural Reserves
- Argentine Ornithological Meetings
A society that is aware of what is happening to the environment is vital for bringing about positive changes in the conservation of our flora and fauna.
BirdLife
¿What is BirdLife International?
BirdLife International is a global partnership of non-governmental conservation organizations that focus on wild birds. It works as a group that shares priorities, as well as abilities, achievements and information related to ornithology. They also constantly develop their growth capacity, their competent authority in the subject, and the necessary influence to promote the development of projects and of its mission.
¿What is BirdLife International’s mission?
BirdLife International makes an effort to conserve endangered birds as well as other species, their natural habitats, and global biodiversity. They do this by working with the people and educating them so that they use natural resources properly.
